Message from
the President
February 21, 2007
Dear Parents,
I am writing to share information about
potential legislation that could undermine the
Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG). As many of you
know, the TEG is awarded to eligible Texas
residents who attend private, or independent,
institutions. The State of Texas initially
developed this grant program to assist students
seeking private higher education because it
costs the State less through TEG to enable the
student to be educated at an independent college
rather than to underwrite study in a public
institution.

Recently, Governor Perry
submitted a Proposal on Higher Education that eliminates
the TEG, TEXAS Grant and Texas Educational Opportunity
Grant programs in order to shift their funding to his
new financial aid plan. We think the members of the
House and Senate should understand the popularity and
importance of the TEG program as they consider the
Governor’s proposal.
We are asking students and parents to write letters to
their state representatives and state senators
explaining how important the TEG program is to them.
Even if a student does not receive the TEG, he or she
will still benefit indirectly. With the State support
provided by the TEG, Schreiner University can use its
own funds to support more students.
If you are unsure who your state representative and
senator are, you can go to
http://www.capitol.state.tx.us and fill in the
address in the blue box midway down on the left side of
the page labeled "Who represents me?"
Points to consider in your letter:
· Rather than mention the governor’s proposal, please
focus on the value of TEG: a brief explanation of what
it means to you is the whole point.
· Letters, rather than email, are kept by lawmakers, and
handwritten letters carry great weight.
We appreciate your support for TEG as our state leaders
consider possible changes in financial aid allocations
in the near future.
Sincerely,
