A Brief History
Schreiner University has a colorful history rich with Texas
heritage and traditions beginning in 1917. Schreiner was founded
in that year when a Hill Country rancher, merchant and former
Texas Ranger, Captain Charles Schreiner, asked the Presbyterian
Church to help him put bricks, mortar and people around a dream
he had nurtured for many years. Together they established
"facilities for high grade instruction and military training to
boys and young men as preparation for college and university
work."
Schreiner's first preparatory school students came in 1923 from
remote ranching communities. By 1971, the military training and
uniforms were discontinued and the school became fully
coeducational. In 1973, Schreiner phased out its high school and
strengthened its college curriculum.
Schreiner became a four-year college in 1981. Only a decade
later, it was listed by the U.S. News & World Report's America's
Best Colleges Guide as one of the top regional liberal arts
colleges in the western United States based on its academic
reputation, low student-faculty ratio, alumni satisfaction, and
affordability. On February 16, 2001 the institution's name was
changed to Schreiner University to reflect the greater diversity
of academic offerings and services for the whole student.
Today, Schreiner University is an independent liberal arts
institution related by choice and by covenant to the
Presbyterian Church (USA). The University offers majors in the
liberal arts, the sciences and business administration. In
addition to baccalaureate degrees, it continues to offer
associate degrees and a vocational nursing program. In 1997, the
first master's degree program in education was offered.
Accreditation:
Schreiner University is a Texas non-profit corporation and is
independently governed. The institution is accredited by the
Commission of College of the Southern Association of College and
Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097) to
award masters, baccalaureate and associate degrees. The
University also holds accreditation by the Texas Board of
Vocational Nurse Examiners and is approved by the State Board
for Educator Certification (SBEC) for teacher certification
programs. |
