 Among the Ruins

Sally Alter

I've wandered for years

In this labyrinth

Of my own making

Turning stones marred with sixes

Stacking slate against the skyline

Like stepping stones to God

Sodden with mist

And dripping with lichen

I’ve come to resemble

The bulk of my Neolithic family

Gazing down vacant hallways

Breathing that same stone breath

In the past I stumbled

Through crumbling passages

Rattling on doorways

Peering through skylights

Risking everything

To arrive at the other side

Fantasy

These ruins go on forever

One maw leads to another

In this maze without ending

I turn a corner and come

Face to face with myself again
