In planning for the possibility of a pandemic influenza, Schreiner
University is developing guidelines for students, staff, faculty,
volunteers and their families based on recommendations of the CDC
and the American College Health Association Guidelines. Please save
this webpage to your “Favorites” for future use.
Pandemic flu is a dangerous flu that causes a global outbreak or
pandemic of serious illness. Because there is little natural
immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to person.
An important step you and your student can take now in planning for
a pandemic influenza include getting an annual flu shot. The shot
will not prevent a pandemic flu but by preventing the seasonal flu,
may help to keep your immune system strong in the case of exposure
to a pandemic flu. If your student has not had a flu shot, please
have him or her contact the Health and Wellness Center for
information. It is not too late to get the flu shot this year!
Additionally, educate your family and your student in how to keep
from getting sick. The following guidelines should be practiced on a
daily basis:
1. Practice good health habits, including eating a balanced diet,
exercising daily, and getting sufficient rest
2. Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
3. Put your used tissue in the waste basket.
4. Clean your hands (soap/water or alcohol sanitizer) at EVERY
opportunity.
5. Remind your doctor, nurse, and other healthcare workers to wash
their hands before they touch you.
6. Don’t visit hospitalized friends or family if you are sick.
7. Avoid others who are sick or coughing.
8. Do not share drinks or other food items.
9. When ill, stay home from work, school or places where there are
many people such as class, grocery stores and movie theatres.
10. Notify your professors as soon as is possible regarding class
absences.
