Study Group

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you ever wished you could do something over, knowing what you know now?

That’s impossible, but you can come close using Study Groups.

What is Study Group?

Study Group sessions are weekly review sessions for students enrolled in historically difficult courses:   English 1301 & 1302      History 1301 & 1302      Math 1310   ♦   Chemistry 1401

Study Group provides a chance for you to get together with other students in your class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for study and test yourself before the instructor does so that when the test comes along, you will be ready.

Study Group is provided free of charge to ALL students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades. The sessions are facilitated by a trained professional Study Group Leader and are held at times least likely to conflict with student schedules.

What is a Study Group Leader?

Study Group Leaders are professional educators who are prepared to share what they know about how to study effectively for the course. They know the course content and are anxious to guide you through it.

How does it work?

At each session you will be guided through the course by the Study Group Leader.

The Study Group Leader
will not re-lecture or give class notes. The Study Group Leader will not do your homework or do the thinking for you.

The Study Group Leader will help you make good use of your study time. You have to study. You might as well do it with friends so you can share your knowledge and figure things out together.  The Study Group Leader’s job is to help students think about the lectures they hear and the books they read and then put it all together into some kind of perspective during Study Group sessions so they can learn it more efficiently.

What’s in it for me?

Research shows that students who regularly attend Study Group sessions average one half to one full letter grade higher than their classmates who choose not to attend. When you attend Study Group, you will develop a better understanding of the course content as well as more effective ways of studying.

When do
Study Group sessions start?

Sessions begin the second week of class and session times will be announced. Don’t wait until the night before the test!! Since you have to study, come to Study Group and make efficient use of your study time.

What does it cost?

Study Group costs you nothing except your time. Assistance is free! Come as often as you like. Keep in mind the statistics show that the more you come, the better your grade.

Study Group sessions are informal

Bring your notes  ♦  Bring your text book  ♦  Bring your questions

Bring your classmates  ♦  Bring your friends
