August:
Welcome to Schreiner University! This will be an exciting year
for you. We hope you will make the most of it and take advantage of
all the available campus activities.
• Join a student organization and make some new friends who have the
same interests as you. “Get the Scoop on Campus Groups” will be
11:00 – 1:00 on Wednesday, August 29th in the Student Center.
• Are you eligible for a work-study job? Visit
Human Resources in the Guy Griggs Building to see what is
available.
• At the end of August you will have a final opportunity to add or
change courses.
September:
Now that you are beginning to settle in, look for more opportunities
to make new friends and to explore campus life.
• Attend events presented by
Student Activities and
Campus Ministry or participate in intramurals and adventure
activities through
Campus Recreation.
• Are you a commuter student? Every Wednesday at noon, we will have
“Lunch in the
Library” just for you. There will be a free lunch and
discussions of subjects important to commuters.
• At mid-month, your first set of grades will be posted so that you
can gauge your progress and make some course corrections. Meet with
your academic adviser or with Student Resources and Support to see
what kind of help Schreiner has to offer.
October:
Things will be getting much busier for you. Take a little time off
for Fall Break so you will be able to hit the ground running for the
rest of the semester.
• You will have mid-term exams and grades reported.
• Towards the end of the semester you will have one more opportunity
to drop a course. Sorry, can’t go under 12 hours or you won’t be a
full-time student.
• The last weekend in October is
Family Weekend. Invite your family to campus so they can get a
feeling for what you are experiencing.
November:
Just a few weeks are left in the semester.
• November 12-16 is freshman class registration for spring semester.
You are required to have course approval from your academic adviser
in order to register. See your adviser before registration week to
discuss your options.
• Enjoy your Thanksgiving vacation. Take a little time to think
about your major and then visit with your academic adviser when you
return to campus.
• If you are thinking about a summer job or an internship, check
Career Services to see how they might help.
December:
Last day of classes,
Midnight Breakfast and final exams - there are lots of places to
study on campus so find a quiet spot to maximize your reviews.
Best wishes for a happy and safe holiday.
January:
• Think again about joining a
student organization. If you have not connected to campus as
well as you expected, joining a student group can be a great way to
meet new people.
• Got the feeling you should be giving back to the community? Check
with
Campus Ministry or the Volunteer Service Council in the Student
Services office.
• Become a Resident Assistant or a Peer Adviser for your sophomore
year. Check with
Residence Life (RA) and
Campus Recreation (PA) to find out the requirements.
February:
• Four-week grades are reported. These grades are a very good
indicator of where you stand in your classes. Get some help if you
are not as doing well as you’d like.
• Explore internships and summer jobs with
Career Services. Get your résumé cleaned up and learn some
interview techniques to prepare yourself for all those job
interviews!
• If you are thinking about being an RA or a PA, talk to a student
who is one for information on the application process.
•
FAFSA time - get ready for next fall by completing your
paperwork and getting it into
Financial Aid.
March:
• Mid-terms!
• Start thinking about what courses you will be interested in for
next fall.
• Finish up your
FAFSA if you have not already done so.
• Spring Break and Easter Holiday! Just a few weeks and you will
have finished your first year of college. Have a good time, but be
safe.
April:
• Last day to drop a course; that is, as long as you don’t go under
12 hours.
• April 12-16 is freshman class registration for next fall semester.
Prior to registration week, spend time with your academic adviser
discussing your major and creating a plan to achieve your goals.
• It’s time for the on-campus housing lottery. Decide where you want
to live and with whom.
• Give some thought to summer school. It’s a good time to repeat a
course or to get a tough one out of the way.
• Summer
financial aid applications are due.
May:
• Last day of class,
Midnight Breakfast and finals! After last semester you should
know the ropes and it should be a bit easier for you to finish up.
• Congratulations! You have completed your freshman year!
Have a great summer, be safe and we will welcome you back next fall
as a sophomore.
