What is the single most important thing that I can do to be
successful in college?
Go to class. There is a direct correlation between class attendance
and academic success.
As a freshman, when are grades reported?
Grades and absences are reported three times during the semester –
at 4 weeks, mid-term and at the end of the semester and should be
used as a strong indication of a student’s academic progress.
What is the best way for me to insure that I do well in class?
Get to know your instructor. Ask questions, especially about
something you do not fully understand. Participate in class.
What is an academic advisor?
Your academic advisor is an instructor teaching in your major field
of study. Your advisor is a mentor and guide during your time at
Schreiner making suggestions, monitoring progress and planning for
your curriculum requirements. Develop a relationship. See your
advisor often.
I want to get off to a good start academically. What should
I do?
Schreiner has free tutors and a writing center. Arrange for tutoring
early in the semester BEFORE you start to fall behind. Get
together with other classmates and form a study group. This is
especially helpful in studying for exams.
Are there other things I should do to help me be successful
during my first semester at Schreiner?
College is not all testing and study. Seek a balance of academics,
social activities and a healthy lifestyle. Make new friends, join a
student organization and make the most of your time on campus.
What do I do if I can’t make it to class?
There will be times when you will not be able to attend class and
that is understood, however, it is your responsibility to notify the
instructor in advance that you cannot make it to class and no matter
the situation you are still responsible for completing work missed
during your absence.
